I have never been what you would call shy. In fact, I do believe I came out of the womb telling it like it was. I wasn’t afraid of speaking my mind. As a child I was very secure with with who I was and had no problem proclaiming it to the world. I let [...]

Diabetes and the Holidays: The Blood Sugar Rollercoaster is Now Boarding!
by Dr. Jonathan Rader on Nov 16, 2011
There’s no denying that the holidays are a time to celebrate, and that means sitting down to some major meals. You might look forward to a full turkey dinner all year or that special breakfast right after opening presents. No matter what’s on the menu, keeping track of your blood sugar is important so that [...]
I AM WOMAN HEAR ME ROAR
by Melissa DeHart - Former Patient/Alumni Coordinator on Oct 07, 2011
One day you finally have Enough!!…and you know what you have to do. Despite the “Voices” around you “shouting bad advice”, …”burning a hole inside your head”…you simply…”LET GO”!! Your hands trembling, your knees weak, you clear your throat and grasp to hear yourself speak what your mind has been whispering to you for so [...]
SAVING “PRIVATE NOT SO NICE!” | MOVING BEYOND MY REGRETS AS AN ANOREXIC
by Melissa DeHart - Former Patient/Alumni Coordinator on Sep 29, 2011
I hate to break it to you, but you are not perfect. There are going to be days where you are going to Eff up. You’re going to say the wrong thing, you are going to get yelled at by your boss, you are going to run that red light, scream at your kids, [...]
Mama Said Knock You Out
by Melissa DeHart - Former Patient/Alumni Coordinator on Aug 29, 2011
My parents made the Sopranos look like the Cleavers. If my father wasn’t slamming the door as he sped off in his car, my mother was taking all of his clothes and burning them in the fireplace, or breaking into his place of business and doing her own CSI investigation on his bank statements.
Talk To The Face, Because The Mind Ain’t Listening
by Melissa DeHart - Former Patient/Alumni Coordinator on Aug 22, 2011
I was talking to a patient the other day in my office. I listened to her for about an hour go on and on about what she had eaten for lunch, how much she had eaten for breakfast, what she was going to eat for dinner, and how many calories that was. Then she segwayed [...]
If The Shoe Fits, Then Buy Another One
by Melissa DeHart - Former Patient/Alumni Coordinator on Aug 13, 2011
I love to shop for shoes. There I said it, not like most of my friends, relatives, or anybody who has seen my feet in the last 24 hours didn’ t know that. It’s probably one of my favorite things to do in the whole world. I own…well lets just say a lot of them. I shop for them all the time, but no much more so then when I am lonely, then when I am bored, or when I am completely pissed off at somebody. I would say that most of my shoes are what I have coined “retail therapy”, and chances are if you…
Build A Bridge, And Get Over It
by Melissa DeHart - Former Patient/Alumni Coordinator on Aug 12, 2011
The one thing that people seem to be most interested in and curious is how I was able to survive such a terrible and devastating disease as anorexia and bulimia, and how I have managed to maintain my recovery. I know everybody is looking for that magic answer, trying to tap into it, and sometimes it makes me feel like the Oracle from the Matrix. They stare at me holding their breath just kind of waiting for me to give them the key to the door they have been trying to unlock for so long.
Miss World Doesn’t Miss A Meal – Major ‘Miss’ Justice
by Melissa DeHart - Former Patient/Alumni Coordinator on Aug 09, 2011
It seems like we can’t turn around without seeing a beauty contestant stripped of her crown. I sometimes laugh when I watch a pageant these days, saying “I give her one day, before pictures of her dancing on a “stripper pole” and doing tequila shots off her “college roommate” start to surface.
FAT Is Not A Four-Letter Word! Part II
by Melissa DeHart - Former Patient/Alumni Coordinator on Aug 04, 2011
If the modern average woman could somehow track down a time machine and transport herself to Florence in the 1400′s she might feel a tad bit more comfortable with her body. She might actually not skip the butter at the breakfast table, the cream in her coffee, or order her salad dressing on the side. Skinny Jeans would have been outlawed and deemed illegal, because having a curvaceous figure was what was in – what was beautiful – what was, should we say [clears throat]…realistic?
