Celebrities with Anorexia: Lucy Hale Comes Clean About Eating Disorder Battle

Pretty Little Liars star Lucy Hale is the latest of celebrities with anorexia to come forward and discuss her condition publicly. In the September issue of Cosmopolitan, the actress comes clean about struggling with an eating disorder. The Cosmo interview reveals that the star would sometimes go days without eating.

For those as-of-yet unfamiliar with Lucy Hale, she got her start on American Juniors, an American Idol spinoff for younger contestants. Since then she landed several guest-starring roles on various Nickelodeon and Disney shows, before starring in the short-lived CW drama Privileged. However, she is most renowned for her current role as Aria on ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars.

Though Lucy Hale’s career is taking off, the pressures in the entertainment industry to appear thin have taken their toll. “I’ve never really talked about this, but I would go days without eating. Or maybe I’d have some fruit and then go to the gym for three hours,” Hale reveals in the interview.

It is common for those who are suffering from anorexia nervosa to use exercise as a means of dieting. After consuming calories, many anorexics are eager to hit the gym in order to immediately burn off those calories.

“I knew I had a problem. It was a gradual process but I changed myself.” Hale noted in the interview.

Hale, who was once shy about discussing her body image, seems quite confident and proud to discuss her eating disorder. Since getting treatment for her eating disorder, she appears to be in a better place in her life. Last month she won a Teen Choice Award for her role as Aria. She also just signed a deal with Hollywood Records to release a country album. She hopes to give Taylor Swift a run for her money!

It is excellent that more and more celebrities such as Lucy Hale and Demi Lovato feel comfortable discussing their eating disorders publicly. We hope that these celebrities can show their fans who are struggling with eating disorders that hope is available by getting treatment in an eating disorders program.
